Not one for the purists, but this AAR lookalike would make an awesome casual cruiser.
The E-body Plymouth Barracuda is one of the most recognisable and desired 70s US muscle cars.
Before the E-body, the first and second-gen Barracudas shared a lot of metal with the Valiant, and were closer to pedestrian cars with a bit of an econo-box image. The E-body or third-generation Barracuda shed that image, and remains an extremely desirable car today.
Available only as a coupe or convertible, with drivetrain options covered everything from small displacement sixes to the iconic Hemi ‘Cudas.
The 1972 facelift included round taillights as well as a new grille and a return to single headlights, as well as minor changes to the bumpers in order to adhere to emerging US Federal Impact regulations.
For 1973, transmission options included a three-speed manual, Torqueflite automatic or a Hurst shifter four-speed. The 225ci six-cylinder was dropped from the range, leaving only the 318 and 340 V8s as options. Later year ’73 production cars saw the 340ci replaced with the 360ci V8.
This car is a 1973 Plymouth Barracuda, painted in Moulin Rouge (Dark Pink).
It looks to be in great nick with plenty of work tipped into it. Floorpans are reportedly in excellent condition and there is no rust present.
However, it’s not one for the ‘matching numbers’ purists, or those chasing originality.
It is fitted with a period, and possibly original, 360ci V8 mated to a 904 three-speed automatic gearbox. Edelbrock carburettor, new headers and mopar rocker covers now adorn the engine.
Inside there’s a completely new white interior, along with a modern Alpine stereo system, retractable seatbelts and power steering.
Outside sees a rear louvre and ducktail spoiler, as well as bonnet pins and an AAR decal kit.
The car is on offer by TGS Muscle Cars in Melbourne for $69,000.
The price is fair for a mid-spec Barracuda especially with this much work put into it, as real AAR or Hemi ‘Cudas would likely see an extra digit on the price tag.
Genuine or not, we still reckon it looks awesome!
