1973 Humber Sceptre – today’s tempter

Brit luxury

Most younger car enthusiasts may not be intimately familiar with the Humber name, considering the British luxury marque stopped selling cars in Australia more than half a century ago.

The third iteration of the Sceptre hit markets in 1967, and was based on the Rootes Arrow platform. It shared these underpinnings with numerous models including the Hillman Hunter, various Sunbeams, and even the Iranian-built Paykan – though the Sceptre topped the range.

By this time the Rootes group was owned by Chrysler, and the MkIII Sceptre was deemed unviable to send down under.

The 1973 model on sale here is innately tied to Australia’s Humber Car Club – it’s a personal import from Belfast, owned by the club’s president for the last 40 years. The numbers-matching, alloy-headed 1725cc four wears a set of fresh extractors and feeds the optional four-speed auto. The car is in Lota, QLD, and has an asking price of $32,000.
