K10-code Ex-NSW police car; 265ci Hemi, highly-desired four-speed manual
Chrysler’s VJ Valiant was produced from 1973 to 1975, and seemingly had something in the range for every conceivable buyer.
Sedans, wagons, coupes and utes were all available with range of Chrysler’s hemi-six, ranging from 215ci through 245ci and 265ci. There was also initially a 340ci V8 available, however a facelift in 1974 saw it replaced by the larger 360ci, and added front power assisted brakes, retracting front seat belts, and a front stabiliser bar throughout the range.
Most VJs are found with either three-speed autos or manuals, although four-speed manuals do exist and are highly sought-after.
Visually, the VJ gained a new front end, new trim and a larger palette of exceedingly 70s colours to choose from at the dealer.
This ’73 VJ Charger caught our eye, as an ex-NSW police car, denoted by Chrysler’s factory option code: K10.
The K10 pack was the VJ’s police pack, apparently available exclusively to the NSW police force, and comprised of: the 265ci Hemi with a four-barrel carburettor, E49 crankshaft, connecting rod bearings, main bearings and an E49 baffled oil pan. The pack also includes the highly-desired four-speed floor shift, with power assisted disc brakes, Suregrip rear axle and reclining bucket seats inside.
This one received a bare-metal restoration in 2019, and was resprayed in its factory colour of Amber metallic, while its interior was retrimmed in white vinyl with custom amber inserts.
The vehicle is supported by a large file of restoration photos, as well as original log books (with its former service history), and original keys.
The current seller has owned the vehicle since 2018, before which the car reportedly sat in a container for almost 20 years.
