Very desirable and honest-looking 70s Alfa coupe in solid running condition
Alfa 105 series coupes are highly regarded classics; with merits found in their beautiful design and their road manners.
It’s always been the big GTV that’s cast a shadow over the ‘junior’ 1300 and 1600s, though the entire range is becoming more and more collectible through the great passage of time.
The Alfa GT 1300 Junior was introduced as the entry-level model for Alfa’s coupe range in 1965, with the stopgap 1600 model arriving in 1972.
They were free-revving little terrors that encouraged you to drive them hard – and certainly weren’t happiest when pottering around town below 4000rpm. These engines live in the upper rev-range, and offered a sublime driving experience with the smooth five-speed gearbox.
105-series Alfa coupes are also very much in demand, with extensively restored 1600 Junior models fetching the upper regions of $70,000-$80,000.
This 1973 Alfa Romeo GT 1600 is not an extensively restored example; in fact, on inspection it looks to be an honest, well-kept unrestored – dare we say – “survivor”.
But it’s less than half the price of other restored examples on the market; and if it’s a runner, it certainly looks like an attractive and characterful Italian classic to us!
It comes from long term ownership, with the seller stating to have owned the car for the past 33 years.
They describe the car to be in “good condition for age”, and has had its diff rebuilt and new tyres fitted. The listing indicates that there is a spare engine and gearbox too!
The body shows some signs of age but looks to be original and unrestored, with some surface rust identifiable below the front grille and perhaps a touch around the wheel arch. The interior, too, looks fairly original and unrestored with a few tears in the seat and some worn upper door cards.
If you’re after a desirable Italian classic to enjoy and perhaps turn into a bit of a long-term project, this handsome Alfa coupe might fit the bill nicely. It’s not a concours condition car, but that means you won’t be dissuaded to drive it – and that’s what these things do best!
The car is based in Tasmania, and is listed for $28,000.
