1972 Valiant Charger – today’s tempter

1972 Valiant Charger

Conceived and built on a shoestring budget, Chrysler Australia’s unique Charger series was for a time a runaway success.

Mark Higgins notes in a story on the series: “Demand swamped supply. It won a major touring car race on debut. Wheels magazine awarded it the 1971 Car of the Year and its popularity was such that at one point it accounted for 80 per cent of all Australian VH Valiant production.”

For performance hounds, the E49 R/T represented the top of the range.

The lively 265ci (4.3lt) straight six powerplant with its triple Weber carburetors was in this case backed by a four-speed Borg Warner manual transmission.

Only 149 were built and there are replicas out there. This example claims to be the real thing and is with Australian Muscle Car Sales in Sydney, priced at $269,500.
