1972 Mercedes-Benz 230 – Todays Tempter

An affordable and beautiful example of a timeless classic

The W114/W115 was the first post-war all new Mercedes-Benz. Designed and engineered from the ground up with an all new chassis, and introduced in 1968, the car’s frame shared no components with any Mercedes-Benz before it.

With semi-trailing arms at the rear and a ball-joint front end, the platform would be utilised in all Mercedes-Benz passenger cars up until the 80s.

For the pre facelift W114s, engine choice ranged from 2.3lt, through 2.5lt, to 2.8lt inline-sixes.

In 1973, the W115 was introduced, denoting the W114’s mid-cycle update. The W115 received a lower bonnet line, lower and longer grille, single front bumper replacing the W114’s double bumper, and lower headlights among other subtle visual changes.

Of all pre-facelift W114s, the 2.3lt 230 model was the most common and most affordable, with 152,822 produced.

Despite the largest production pool, this W114 230 looks to be an extremely well kept example; with an almost perfect interior free of tears and rips, and a mere 71,669 miles on the odometer over its 46 years of life.

On offer by Lorbek Luxury Cars in Melbourne, for $15,990 – this white over tan 230 is a rare right hand drive classic example of a timeless luxury saloon.

Purportedly previously owned by a fastidious and meticulous classic enthusiast, Lorbek states the car was garaged and stored for many years, only driven on occasion.

While most would opt for the larger displacement 250s or 280s, such a well-kept classic like this is hard to pass up at this price point.
