1972 Holden HQ SS – Todays Tempter

The original SS: Period-correct replacement 253 fitted, manual, presents and drives well

It was a stroke of genius – the original SS.

Based on the humble Belmont model, it was meant to be an affordable V8 car from the outset. For just $3500 on the road, you got the 253 V8, backed up by the M20 four-speed, 3:36 diff’, bucket seats, Monaro dash, a fancy steering wheel, and an outrageous colour palette from which to choose from.

Of course, colour choice was – in actuality – rather illusionary as overwhelming demand meant buyers simply got what they got. That is, if they were lucky enough to get one at all.

GMH originally intended to produce 1500 SS’, but overwhelming demand forced a second batch of 1300 to be produced.

This one on sale here appears to be a very clean example of the breed.

The listing asserts that it is, however, fitted with a non-original period-correct replacement 253ci V8, but remains original in all other respects.

Presenting very well throughout in photos and with around 72,000 miles indicated on the odometer in photos, the car is described to run and drive beautifully. The seller also states that the car is on the HQ SS register.

If anyone is after a local turn-key proposition with seemingly nothing to do buy drive and enjoy, this HQ SS looks like a very attractive candidate.

You can find the car in Queensland, listed for $75,000.
