1971 Mercedes-Benz 300SEL – today’s tempter

Luxo rocket

Cars like the 300SEL belong to a different era and provide an experiience that’s completely different from anything you’ll find in a current showroom.

Among other things, the 300SEL represents a good old-fashioned factory hotrod. In our feature on the series we note: “The W109 300SEL 6.3 started out as a private venture in 1966 by company engineer Erich Waxenberger.

“Waxenberger’s principle was simple: Take the powerful 6.3-litre V8 Mercedes-Benz M-100 engine from the luxurious  600 limousine and fit it into the regular  W109 S-Class model, which only had six-cylinder engines at that time. The result was a saloon weighing nearly two tonnes with performance similar to most dedicated sports cars of the era.”

This example is said to be in very good shape with receipts for recent work. It’s with Lorbek in Melbourne at $129,990.
