1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE – today’s tempter

V8 cruiser

Back in the early 1970s, driving a Benz S class was a clear statement of wealth and perhaps that you appreciated what was a truly great distance car.

Benz launched the W108 series in 1965 and delivered them with a variety of engines, starting with a 2.5lt straight six. That went up to the 6.3lt V8 out of the W100 Pullman, which created the legendary W109 300 SE and SEL.

Somewhat less extreme is this upper-end model the 280 SE. It ran a 3.5lt V8, in this case matched to a three-speed automatic transmission.

Known as the M116, the Bosch-injected V8 claimed a healthy 197hp (147kW), enough to give the car very respectable performance.

This example is with Prestige Auto Gallery in Sydney, priced at $32,990.
