This car should need no introduction.
But in case you’ve been living under a rock since 1971, here’s the low down.
Ford built just 300 Phase III GTHOs, which arrived at the height of the Red v Blue muscle car wars, which saw the fierce battles at Mount Panorama spill into the showroom floor.
Ford knew they had to turn up the wick even further from the 1970 XW Phase II, and did just that.
There was even more power squeezed out of the 351, and while it was always claimed to make 300hp – evidence suggests it was closer to the 350hp mark. The engine gained a bigger carby and more aggressive cam profiles, and the car received better brakes and handling to match.
The result? A full podium sweep at Bathurst in the 1971 Hardie-Ferodo 500 – and its status as an Australian motoring legend cemented.
The GTHO has been a bit of a hot topic this year as values continue to skyrocket. Big headlines were made back in June when a Phase III sold for $1.030 million at a Lloyds auction.
This car is a little more “affordable”.
It’s a genuine 1971 XY Falcon GTHO Phase III, finished in Vermillion fire and all original black trim.
The sellers state that the car has been fully restored and is in beautiful condition.
Included in the sale is a large historical dossier, complete with pictorial documentation since new, all ownership history, original log book, owner’s manual and ford verification.
Our earliest value literature pegs Phase III values in 1985 at just $22,600. This car is listed for $795,000, via Australian Muscle Car Sales.
Yes, this car (and its price tag) will divide opinion, but it’s a fair bet to say this car offers some pretty hefty headroom from the investment point of view.
