1971 Ford Fairlane 500 survivor – today’s tempter

Big locally-assembled cruiser

Loved by management and successful sales people, and anyone who wanted a car that could cover a lot of miles in comfort, the Fairlane series won a lot of hearts over its lifespan.

We have to admit to this generation being a bit of a favourite – the ZC-ZD series with the vertically-stacked headlights. That styling cue came out of the USA Ford range of 1966-67.

At the rear, the ZD is distinguished by the stacked horizontal rear lamps, similar in style to an XY Falcon. It ran from 1970 to 1972.

To some extent a stretched Falcon, with vastly more rear seat room, these cars were popular for their superior ride and long-legged nature.

By the time the ZD came around, it was running three engine choices: the 250 (4.1lt) six, plus 302 (5.0lt) and 351 (5.7lt) V8s. A three-speed auto was the transmission of choice.

This example got our attention because it claims to be a survivor with just 75,500 miles (121,500km) on it.The pics suggest it presents well and it has a desirable 302 in the snout.

Based in Queensland, it’s priced at $29,500.
