Dramatic and unique ‘70 Mustang Grande, a little-known luxury variant of the early 70s
Ford’s game-changing Mustang arrived in 1964 and found immediate commercial success. Ford Motor Company famously received 22,000 orders on opening day, and essentially created a class of its own, birthing accessible sporting and performance motoring for the masses.
They hit their peak in 1966, selling over 600,000 units in that year alone; though sales began to slow in the years after thanks to new rivals like GM’s Camaro of 1967 – which had had more powerful V8s, and a Trans-Am Championship in 1968.
Ford Execs were eager to branch out within the Mustang’s lineup. More famously, to fight back against the Camaro’s motorsport success, they released the Boss 302 in 1969, as a road-car homologation of their would-be SCCA competitor.
On the other side of the spectrum, and far less well-known today, was the Mustang Grande offered from 1969 to 1973. The Grande was a more luxury-oriented variant for those who wanted the Mustang’s signature performance without compromising on creature comforts. They’re barely remembered today, but sold a respectable 22,000 units in that first year of production.
Which brings us to this 1970 Mustang Coupe for sale today.
We’d almost describe it as a restomod: it left the factory as a Mustang Grande and still bears its beautiful and rare woodgrain interior and houndstooth upholstery.
It’s received a few sporty touches such as the shaker hood, pacemaker extractors and twin exhaust pipes – making it look a little more like its Boss 302 siblings.
It’s fitted with the 302 V8 coupled with a three-speed automatic; and has been converted to RHD and fitted with power steering.
Furthermore, the car has received new brakes and suspension, and has had the electrical system redone. Overhaul it looks more than presentable both inside and out, and is described by the seller as an honest, regularly driven car.
The unique ’70 Mustang is based in Melbourne and is listed for $42,999.
