The consummate classic, and one of the most sought after Pony cars
The first Mustang arrived in 1964 and found immediate commercial success, essentially creating a class of its own and birthing accessible sporting and performance motoring for the every day person.
But by the late 60s, the 67 Camaro had emerged, with more powerful V8 engines, and a championship title in the 1968 Trans-Am series.
Not to be outdone by GM’s new kid, Ford needed to fire back with a competitor of their own. But SCCA regulations needed manufacturers to be selling a production version of any race car entered in the series.
So Ford developed a new Mustang for 1969 with a thumping 302 V8 heart, and the mission statement: “race on Sunday, sell on Monday”.
As for the Boss name? Legend has it that when designer, Larry Shinoda, was asked at the time what he was working on – he would simply and secretly reply “the boss’ car”.
Subsequently, then the race-focused Mustang rolled into showrooms in 1969, it bore the Mustang Boss 302 designation.
The Boss 302 was only in production for two years, this car stamped with a build year of 1970.
The car presents stunningly in Grabber Blue and plays a host various rare factory options such as deluxe interior trim, Magnum wheels, rear spoiler, louvres, fold down rear seats and bonnet mounted tachometer.
The car still bears its factory and original engine, however has been rebuilt with solid cams and mated to a new clutch and exhales through a x-pipe exhaust system.
Of the few Boss 302s you’ll come across, this car looks to be a complete and impeccable example. From the listing it looks like the new owner will need nothing for the car, except to enjoy.
