1970 Chrysler VG Dodge Utility – Todays Tempter

Neat fettled VG Dodge utility: 318ci V8, Charger steering wheel, VF Pacer tacho, good condition

The VG Chrysler Valiant arrived onto the scene in 1969, and looked much the same as the preceding VE. Rectangular headlight buckets, new tail lamps and grille aside; the VG is remembered as the car that debuted the new Australian-made 245ci “Hemi” six-cylinder – one of the best powerplants in its day.

As Chrysler’s mainstream offering, there was an expansive range of trim levels and body styles, including four-door sedan, two-door hardtop, five-door station wagon and two-door utility.

On the utility front, many would remember the popular Wayfarer, however there was also a Dodge-branded utility on offer to service the trade and fleet market.

The Dodge-branded utilities were first offered in the VC range, and were dechromed and spartanly packaged workhorses with heavier load ratings and are usually found with the most basic three-on-the-tree configurations.

This VG Dodge utility looks like a near little unit with just enough subtle touches to make it stand out from the crowd.

Around the back, the ute’s usual full-width tail lamp and trim assembly have been replaced with a VF-generation station wagon tail lamps and bumper, while the interior is fitted with a Charger steering wheel and VF Pacer tachometer.

Under the bonnet sits a 318ci V8 with a Crane Cam, a 904 auto, Edelbrock manifold, 600 Holley carburettor, ceramic coated Pacemaker extractors, and full twin exhaust system.

It looks like a well-sorted ute that should be plenty of fun cruising on the weekend, and even though it may not present 100% as-factory, however most likely won’t even notice.

The Dodge utility is based in Queensland and is listed for $35,000.
