1969 AC Cobra replica – Toybox

In this case they went for GM rather than Ford power

It seems that Carroll Shelby’s inspired decision back in the 1960s to shoe-horn a Ford V8 into a modified Brit AC sports car was almost intuitive and has never lost its appeal.

These days, if you want to get your hands on the real thing – AC Cobra, Shelby Cobra, call it what you will – you’re going to need some millions at your disposal.

And of course that led to an international industry in building replicas and variants with varying degrees of faithfulness to the originals.

One option is what you see here, built by South African firm the Kit Car Centre, which is said to have traded from 1982 though to 2003.

Like a number of folk tackling this concept, they opted to slightly enlarge the original package – which is tiny – with a little extra width and length.

In this case they also went for GM rather than Ford power, with a 454 big block claiming over 300kW at the rear wheels. That is hooked up to a Turbo 400 auto and Ford 9-inch diff.

It’s with Muscle Car Warehouse in Sydney and is priced at $195,000.

The car listed as a 1969 and is on club plates in NSW.
