Extensively restored, extensively documented – looks like an awesome cruiser
1965 to 1968 saw the Chrysler Newport built upon the all-new Chrysler C-platform.
With new boxy styling, heavily influenced by the Lincoln Continental and the 1964 Chrysler Imperial, the Newport is a bold and handsome design case.
Body options included four-door sedans, hardtops and station wagons, as well as a two-door hardtop and convertible.
The standard engine and transmission combination was originally a 383ci V8 with two-barrel carburettor and a three-speed column-shift manual. A 383ci with a four-barrel was available as an option as well as a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic.
1966 saw the introduction of Chrysler’s new 440ci V8 with the TNT package, that included a four-barrel carby, dual exhausts and dual-snorkel air cleaner.
The Newport received a minor facelift for the final 1968 year, most visually distinguished by new taillights and the deeper ‘V’ grille.
This 1968 Chrysler Newport was originally purchased in the US by its current Australian owner. After road tripping trouble-free across America, the car was shipped back to Australia in 2014.
The car is LHD and is registered in NSW through to May 2019.
The car has been extensively reconditioned both with its previous USA owner who had the car bare-metal resprayed in original colour, replaced the windshield and vinyl top among others, and undertook a full rebuild of the original four-barrel 383 V8 and TorqueFlite transmission.
Its current Australian owner has carried on the fastidious maintenance and restoration with new suspension, steering box, radio and various other parts.
The ad listing is well written and massively detailed, which bodes well for the seller as an honest and caring owner.
The seller states that the A/C does not currently work, however he has a replacement part for what he believes may be the problem.
The car will also come with a number of spares, including a new windshield.
For $23,000 the car looks extremely well cared for, and is reportedly in effortless running condition.
Chrysler C-bodies are a rare sight in Australia, and the sheer size and style of this thing would make a terrific Sunday cruiser.
