Big comfy and almost unbreakable – that’s Impalas for you
Chevrolet Impala seems to be one of those stand-by American classics that are plentiful and should be easy to live with. At the time when this third-generation car was built, they were hugely popular in the USA and were selling literally by the truckload.
For 1968 the range was given some cosmetic changes and, more importantly, the interiors were upgraded for more comfort.
You had a wealth of choices in powerplants, starting with a 250ci six, then on to V8s from 307ci all the way up to 427.
Transmissions for the V8s could either be the two-speed Powerglide or the three-speed Turbo Hydramatic.
The car you see here is a 327ci (5.4lt) which came with either 250 or 275hp ratings, running the Powerglide transmission.
These are very simple vehicles to live with and, outside the cost of fuel, are cheap to maintain. Rust is always the big issue and the one thing that should be assessed with a little care. There will nearly always be some, and a little here and there shouldn’t be a deal-breaker.
The Queensland-based owner of this example says it comes registered and with a roadworthy certificate, which is a good sign and we have to say it seems like a lot of car for the $22,000 asking price.
