Good alternative to a Mustang
If you fancy an American coupe from the muscle or pony car era, and want an alternative to a Mustang, this is your answer.
The Ford-owned Mercury marque came up with this alternative, the Cougar. Our feature on the model says: “The Mercury Cougar was announced in September 1966 and slipped easily into the space between Ford’s Mustang and Thunderbird. While still regarded as a ‘Pony Car’, the Cougar sat on a wheelbase 100mm longer than the Mustang’s and took styling cues such as its roof-line and concealed headlights from full-sized models like the T-bird.”
This Melbourne-based example is running the familiar 289ci (4.7lt) V8, arguably the sweetest out of the Ford stable at the time, matched to a three-speed C4 auto.
The seller says it’s been a rolling resto for the last five years and has had a lot of work completed while presenting as a generally tidy car. It’s on the market at $35,000.
