1967 Ford Falcon XR ute – Todays Classic Tempter

This one looks ace

The XR Ford Falcon was an important car for the Blue Oval, as it was the first iteration of the second generation of Aussie made Falcons.

Introduced in 1966, the XR Falcon had a relatively short production life of just two years, before being replaced by the XT Falcon in 1968.

In that brief lifespan however, the XR pioneered quite a few concepts that had not seen in an Aussie made Falcon before, and also garnered a great deal of accolades.

For a start, the XR was the first locally made falcon to be offered with a V8 donk, the 289ci (4.7l) Windsor V8.

It was also the first Aussie made car that could be optioned with a V8 in any level of trim. Previously, V8s had been reserved for the higher spec models.

The XR was offered in four different body styles: a 4-door sedan, 5-door station wagon, 2-door ute and a 2-door panel van.

Drivetrain offerings included a 2.8l and 3.3l inline-6 and the 4.7l Windsor V8. Transmissions on offer included a 3-speed manual, 3-speed automatic and a 4-speed manual which was only made available to the GT model.

Critical reception of the XR was very good, and in 1966 it won the Wheels Magazine ‘Car of the Year’ award.

It was also very successful on the racetrack, and in the hands of Harry Firth and Fred Gibson, the XR Falcon GT won the 1967 Gallaher 500 at Mount Panorama.

This particular XR is a 1967 ute and, judging from the pictures, appears to be in excellent condition.

However, it isn’t exactly what you’d call ‘stock as a rock’; the XR has had some changes made to it, presumably to make it a more usable daily proposition.

The engine and gearbox have been changed to a 302ci (4.9l) Windsor V8 and a T5 5-speed manual box. It has also been converted to gas and has disc brakes at all four corners.

The seller is asking $35,000 and anyone interested can view the full listing here
