1966 HR Holden – today’s tempter

161 manual

While the 1960s is a very long time ago, a lot of the cars out of that era are still doing good service, mostly as weekend toys. In the case of your average HD-HR Holden, a well-maintained one can be a surprisingly good companion on a long trip.

The HR represents local car manufacturing in its heyday, with production numbers going well into the hundreds of thousands.

According to our feature on the HD-HR series: “Even with the standard three-speed transmission, a 186-engined HR was a pretty punchy device which would hit 100km/h in 13 seconds and reach a top speed of 155km/h. At a time when fuel cost 12 cents a litre, economy didn’t bother most buyers and 15lt/100km from a 186 automatic was considered reasonable. During a combined lifespan of 37 months more than 430,000 HD and HR Holdens were made.”

The owner of this car says it is not perfect but is in good overall condition. It’s running a 161ci (2.6lt) six with three-speed column-shift manual and comes with its original registration plates out of Victoria.

Located near Ballarat, it’s on the market at $46,000.
