Handsome Classic Aussie sedan: good body and interior, starts but needs a little attention
The Holden HD arrived in 1965 with more contemporary lines echoing the Buick, Opel and Vauxhall designs overseas.
Its sides were pumped to house an extra 120mm of shoulder room and six-seat accommodation. Underneath, there were larger drum brakes, alternator-fed electrics and a larger boot.
The upmarket Premier model gained disc brakes as standard for the first time in Holden history.
The 149ci and 179ci ‘red’ motors were carried over, though there was a new twin-carburettor option on the larger engine boosting power output to 104kW.
Sales overshot the much-loved EH, peaking at 20,000 monthly sales just three months after release. Production lasted for 14 months, during which some 170,000 were sold.
This HD Premier has come to market after having been sitting dormant in the garage for the past ten years.
It is fitted with the 179ci red motor and automatic gearbox – presumed to be the two-speed powerglide.
It is described, and looks to be, in very original specification with a good body and interior, and an untouched engine bay.
The seller states that the car shows just 55,000 miles and comes with log books and service history. They add that although the car has been sitting, it was recently successfully started by a mechanic – though will need some attention to get a roadworthy certificate.
Overall however, the car looks to be intact and in fair condition with only a few minor rust spots, according to the listing.
The HD’s styling was contentious when new, but we reckon they’ve aged rather well. This might be a great little project if you have the means – and the spare time.
The HD Prem’ is based in Queensland and is listed for a negotiable $20,000.
