The original XK Falcon developed a notorious reputation for fragility and unreliability, and the succeeding XL and XM models never managed to bring back the buyers who switched over to the Red corner.
With the impending release of the XP, Ford’s new assistant managing director, Bill Bourke (who had only landed Down Under two months prior), hatched a plan to take factory bog-stock Falcons, and run them around You Yangs for 70,000 miles at an average speed of 70mph. The event took place over nine days in April/May 1965.
Subsequently, the XP shed its “fragile” image and became the first Falcon to sell more than 70,000 units during its life cycle.
Body options included a four-door sedan and station wagon, and a two-door hardtop, ute and panel van. The XP was available with a 2.3lt, 2.8lt or a 3.3lt inline-six with power sent to the rear via a three-speed manual, or a two or three-speed automatic transmission.
This 1965 XP Falcon Deluxe has reportedly been with its current owner’s family since it was new!
Purportedly in excellent and “very original” condition, the original jack is still found in its original bag.
The listing suggest the odometer sits at just 80,000kms.
Housed in the Blue Mountains, the car is listed for $27,000.
