1965 Ford Mustang + 1987 BMW M3 E30 + 1968 Pontiac Bonneville Brougham – Phil’s Picks #485

Uncle Phil has been seeking out the best and sometimes left-field classics for you to enjoy on the road and tinker with in the shed.

1965 FORD MUSTANG – A Pony that stands out from the crowd

Here’s a ’65 Mustang with a twist, that makes it stand out from the pack. Because under the bonnet lies a straight-six, not a bent eight. This ’65 Cherry Red Mustang with Wimbledon white and red interior, has been restored and enhanced, as a project by a father and son.

The engine was rebuilt during the resto process and the three-speed auto is the perfect amigo for cruising. The attention to detail is excellent, with the gauges converted to metric. A more modern sound system has been added.

Putting authenticity aside, many non-genuine but high-quality parts have been employed to maintain the Mustang’s mechanical reliability. This Mustang comes with the rego plates JHNWIK, named after the character John Wick, who drives a classic Mustang, in the film series of the same name.

1972 FORD FALCON XY

1972 FORD FALCON XY $74,990.jpeg

Long before Rangers and the like hit Ford showrooms, the Broady boys were pumping out these XY 4×4 utes. Our own Rob Blackbourn had a hand in these, during his time at Ford Aus. These 4×4 Henrys are sought after, and this is the genuine article. Built in 1972 and sold by Grawill Motors Gosford. Only 432 were made and this restored example has a matching-numbers six-cylinder engine and a three-speed manual. The original 4×4 system is in it and it’s finished in Ultra White, with saddle trim. It has extensive history documents, so you will be seen as knowledgeable about it (as you will be asked) and receipts for the restoration.

1987 BMW M3 E30

1987 BMW M3 E30 NZD $199,500.jpeg

If you want this fully restored, matching-numbers E30 BMW M3, the first thing you’ll need is a plane ticket to New Zealand where it’s located. I’ve been lucky enough to punt a couple of E30 M3s and they are fun and fast. This is a right-hand drive version, making it easier to get through the red tape. Prior to the current owner, the previous custodian had it for 28 years. Bought by the seller in 2021, this matching-numbers M3 has had a two-year resto, including a repaint, returning it to factory condition. It even has the original spare tyre, a Pirelli, from new.

1991 FORD FAIRMONT EB

991 FORD FAIRMONT EB $16,000.jpeg

Here’s proof you don’t need a king’s ransom to score yourself a semi-modern classic. This EB Fairmont might look like the average family car from a tad over 30 years ago, but it has had a fair degree of work done on it. Under the bonnet is a new 5.0-litre V8 engine with a ram-air induction system. This donk puts out 185kW, a bit more than it had when new. It has also been resprayed in its original Ford colour. The brakes, suspension and exhaust are all new. Inside it has been treated to an XR8 interior and a new roof lining. It’s a bit of a wolf in sheep’s clothing and best of all, the work is done, so time to enjoy.

1968 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE BROUGHAM

1968 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE BROUGHAM $45,000.jpeg

My first reaction on seeing this was, what is a car like this, doing in a place like that? Being a convertible, it is spot on for the Top End’s weather. This gargantuan Pontiac Bonneville Brougham is a right hooker and build-number 678 of 7358. It was made at GM’s Southgate, California plant. According to the ad, it runs a 400ci V8 and has disc brakes (presumably on the front only) to bring it to a halt. And it shouldn’t leak, as a new convertible top has recently been fitted. It’s the ideal car to drop the top, grab some friends, and go for a Sunday drive together.
