Brabham BT 16 today’s tempter

Classic racer

By the time this Formula Two (F2) Brabham was built, Jack already had two world F1 titles under his belt and his Motor Racing Developments business, building race cars bearing his name, was going gangbusters.

This BT16 Brabham was bought by John Coombes Racing for Graham Hill in F2 with its biggest win being the 1966 Barcelona GP.

Later that year Alec Mildren Racing acquired it and shipped to Australia for Frank Gardner to race in the 1967 Tasman Series.

Gardner secured three third places, including the AGP to finish the series fourth overall behind Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart and Jack Brabham.

At one point this car was also owned by racing legend Fred Gibson.

This is a piece of motorsport history that would be competitive in historic racing or as the centrepiece of any collection. It is somewhat remarkable it is still in Australia. Lorbek has it for sale, priced at $499,850. See the details here.
