1963 Volkswagen Kombi – today’s tempter

Split window era

Volkswagen’s legendary Type 2, or Kombi, is one of the greatest examples of how we have, over the decades, reinterpreted what was once a humble workhorse into a highly-valued collectible.

At the height of the market, we saw the values of 23-Window Samba versions soaring a long way into six figures. This in turn encouraged people to restore early Kombis, particularly anything old enough to have the original split-window front.

Running essentially the same mechancial package as a Beetle, they’re relatively easy to revive and upgrade on that front.

This example has had a substantial upgrade in the form of a 2.4lt powerplant with manual transmission. It has also been the subject of a complete body restoration.

It’s up for acution with Collecting Cars.
