1963 Morris Mini – today’s auction tempter

Brit classic

It seems that an Austin/Morris/Leyland Mini in one of its many forms is one of those cars that we all need to own at least once in our lives.

Some 60 or so years after their launch, they still have an enormous impact on the classic car scene, and rightly so.

In a feature on locally-assembled versions of the series we noted: “Not only did the ‘flying brick’, as it became known, prove that the makers of the staid Austin A40 and Morris Minor had a sense of humour, it showed they were also serious about motorsport.

“The tiny, front-drive Morris 850 (Mini) had already been making its mark on Aussie roads and racetracks since its release the previous year. In fact, a locally-developed hot version of the Mini – the Morris Sports 850, featuring twin carburettors and an improved exhaust – was released as early as the end of August 1961.”

This 1963 example is running a number of upgrades including 998cc engine, disc front brakes and adjustable suspension.
