1962 Porsche 356B Super 90 – today’s tempter

1962 Porsche 356B Super 90

With their distinctive shape and rear-engine layout, early Porsche 356 really stood out on the road and were soon to prove their mettle on the racetrack.

Former Touring Car champ John Bowe, in a feature on a race-prepped 356C, described the platform this way: “These early Porsches don’t weigh much. Everything is so light; the steering, the brakes, the clutch, you never have to wrestle the car. You might think this a strange analogy but it’s almost like riding a motorbike! You almost think it around the corner.”

This 356B is running a premium version of the 1600 flat four with a four-speed manual transmission.

The seller notes: “The Super 90 was factory rated at 90 horsepower from the Type 616/7 Boxer engine, a 50 per cent improvement from a base 356 due to the increased 9.0:1 compression, stronger valve springs and uprated crankshaft with 55mm main bearings.”

It’s with the Healey Factory in Melbourne, priced at $275,000.
