The 356 was Porsche’s first production automobile and the foundation vehicle for the iconic 911. Designed by Ferdinand ‘Ferry’ Porsche, it was a lightweight, nimble- handling, rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive, two-door sports car available in hardtop or convertible configurations.
This 356 from 1962 was delivered new by Hamiltons of South Yarra, one of very few that were delivered new to Australia, making it an extremely rare example.
This Super 90 coupe in the updated T6 body type features twin grilles on the engine cover, larger windows, a handle on the ‘frunk’ tapered towards the bottom with the Porsche crest, headlights positioned higher up and teardrop shape tail-lights with integrated indicators.
The Super 90 was factory rated at 90 horsepower from the Type 616/7 Boxer engine, a 50 per cent improvement from a base 356 due to the increased 9.0:1 compression, stronger valve springs and uprated crankshaft with 55mm main bearings.
The 356B presents in stunning condition, having received a bare-metal repaint in 2013 in its factory original colour of Smyrna Green, highlighted with stunning brightwork and features a restored interior with black leather trim, period radio, inertia seat belts and air-conditioning.
Mechanical improvements that benefit the 356 include a front disc-brake conversion, Koni shock absorbers, Twin IDF40 Weber carburettors, 12V solenoid, starter and wiper motor. This 356 has been well-maintained with a thick history file dating back to 2005, the most recent service was carried out by Beachside Automotive Services in April 2024.
This award-winning rare right-hand drive 356B, complete with certificate of authenticity, has received multiple trophies from the annual Melbourne Porsche 356 parades.
