1962 Lincoln Continental – Todays Tempter

Stately Lincoln Continental makes for a stylish cruiser, and this one even has some celebrity provenance

“American Luxury” read the tagline for the Lincoln brand, and back then luxury was all about size!

Off the back of a financially detrimental period from 1958 to 1960, Lincoln consolidated its entire range into the new-for-1961 Lincoln Continental.

It was a tank of a thing, weighing up to 2.6 tonnes and measuring almost 5.5 metres from stem to stern. Ford built these cars with rigorous quality control and post-build inspections, which paid off with various design and engineering awards, and a reputation as one of the finest mass-produced domestic cars of its time.

Out of the entire Lincoln brand’s history, the 61-64 Continental in particular are highly desired by enthusiasts and collectors around the world.

This 1962 example caught our eye on the classifieds finished in white over red and white trim.

The big Continental also boasts some celebrity provenance, said to have been formerly owned by Australian country singer, Lionel Long.

Interestingly, the seller also states that the car is an “original RHD Australian delivery”, which although may seem unusual is not impossible. Upmarket American cars such as Thunderbirds, Continentals and Galaxies were brought in as RHD vehicles in small numbers for official duties. As our Art Director and American car expert Angelo points out, the VIN should give some clues about its delivery.

Overall however, the car is in well running condition, specified with a 460ci V8 and automatic transmission. It has been treated to various new replacements parts, has had its interior reupholstered, and is overall described as very straight and virtually rust free (photos in listing show two small spots in corner of door and behind rear wheel).

The seller states that the paint is beginning to show its age in places, although all brightwork is presentable; and that the sale will include a variety of spare parts.

It seems well-priced for a what’s a desirable classic model, and looks like a great starting point for someone to cruise as-is with the opportunity to elevate the vehicle in a few areas over time.

The Lincoln Continental is based in New South Wales, and is listed for $40,000.
