1962 Holden EK Standard – Reader Ride

Talk about king of the road, Ty's nice straight EK Holden with its warmed-over grey motor is one sweet home-grown classic

I’m with the Air Force and have just moved back to Adelaide, bringing my EK Holden home with me from Western Australia. This was originally a WA car; the bodyshell rear of the firewall was built at Elizabeth in SA, then sent to Perth for final assembly, so like me it’s simply come back home!

I bought it pretty much as-is near the end of 2011. The previous owner had fitted a bunch of period hop-up gear to the ‘grey’ motor including a lumpy cam, twin SUs on a Thomas manifold, Speco rocker cover and a set of HR disc brakes to pull it up.

It’s the base-model Standard, which has body-coloured tail light surrounds, gauge cluster and head light bezels instead of chrome ones; being so plain, they’ve become pretty rare. I’ve definitely got the bug; I’ve also got a 1959 FC Special and a 1970 HT Kingswood sedan at home.
