Stunning ’62 Thunderbird coming from 19 year ownership: rebuilt 390 V8 with lots of receipts
The third-generation Ford Thunderbird arrived in 1961 with an attention-grabbing smoother and mature design.
The distinctive ‘arrow’ front end was trailed by smooth flanks and an enlarged evolution of the distinctive afterburner tail lights – tapping into the era’s space-race obsession.
Its space-age look weren’t the only innovation however. This generation introduced one of the Thunderbird’s most notable party-tricks in the form of a ‘swing away’ steering wheel, allowing the steering column to slide around 460mm askew, allowing easier egress for the driver. It was also the first production car fitted with a floating rear view mirror.
The drivetrain was only offered with the 390 ci V8 and Cruise-O-Matic auto transmission.
This ’62 Thunderbird comes from long-term 19 year ownership, of which is was garaged the entire time.
The car was originally sourced from California and landed in Australia in the late-90s.
Its 390 FE V8 has been rebuilt, and overall the car appears to be, and is described as, very clean and original.
The seller has many receipts and some history on the vehicle and the sale will include new-in-box rubbers and window felts.
It looks like a ready-to-go cruiser that’s more than presentable. It would make a great weekender with some great road presence.
It’s based in South Australia, and is listed for $25,000.
