Premium sixties cruiser
Drawing on some of the cache’ of its more performance-oriented 300SL cousin, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL proved to be a strong sales success when new and has since become an enduring classic.
Much of its appeal was that proved to be a very comfortable place to be. As our buyer guide on the model points out: “The 190SL was and remains a car for cruising to the coast on warm summer’s evenings and making the neighbours – even in the most elite of neighbourhoods – envious. The cabin was spacious and beautifully-appointed with broad, fully-adjustable seats, framed wind-up windows, comprehensive instrumentation and the best hood in the sports car market.”
The driveline is a 1.9lt four-cylinder powerplant with a four-speed manual transmission.
This example out of Melbourne is said to be the subject of an award-winning restoration and is coming up for auction on February 25 through Donington. It’s carrying an estimate of $320-360,000.
