1960 Holden FB Ute – Old school style with a roaring V8 heart

Headed to Auction with rare car specialists – Chicane Auctions on August 28th at 8:30pm.

There’s something undeniably cool about an FB Holden ute.

With its wrap-around windscreen, pressed-steel lines and no-nonsense workhorse stance, it’s one of those designs that sums up early 60’s Australia.

But every now and then, one pops up that takes the formula to another level – and this fully engineered, Chevy 327 V8 powered example headed to the Chicane Auctions 21–28 August sale is exactly that.

Originally built with a humble 138ci six, this FB has been completely re-engineered to accommodate a Chevrolet small-block, delivering an estimated 400+ horsepower.

The big V8 isn’t just dropped in – it’s properly installed using a Rod Hadfield chassis kit and re-fabricated transmission tunnel, HR Holden crossmember and HR front suspension, while a Ford 9-inch rear end and Torana rack-and-pinion steering underpin its handling.

A HQ disc/drum combination takes up the stopping duties, with the whole driveline built for both strength and reliability. The result is a street-legal, high-performance take on a classic Aussie ute – and one that’s been engineered to ensure it can be driven and enjoyed.

Under the bonnet, the 327ci engine reads like a who’s-who of proven performance parts: TRW forged pistons, fuellie double hump port-flowed heads, stainless valves, roller rockers, Victor Jr intake, Lunati solid cam, Comp valve springs, ARP fasteners and MSD ignition.

A Holley 750 Demon feeds the combination, while Rod Hadfield extractors and a big-bore twin system take care of the soundtrack.

Power is transferred via a Turbo 350 auto (with heavy-duty stall converter) to the Ford 9-inch at the rear and supported by original FB leaf springs and Monroe gas shocks. A high-energy sump, SS drop tank and lightened flywheel complete the no-compromise driveline spec.

In contrast to the serious upgrades underneath, the exterior wears its factory Wedgewood Blue patina with pride. It still looks like a period shop truck – complete with age marks in the paint, wood-lined tub and removable vinyl signage – and that’s a big part of its appeal. The Weld alloy wheels (15×6 and 15×7) give just the right stance without overplaying the visual aggression.

Inside, things stay on-brand with a retrimmed factory bench seat, custom door cards and original FB dash. Two discreet gauges (oil and temp) keep tabs on the big small-block, while the Quiksilver floor shifter gives a subtle nod to the car’s performance intent.

Seat belts are inertia-reel units (with a centre lap belt) and the radio has been updated to something a little more usable.

Put simply, this is one cool Aussie ute. It’s not a trailer queen and has been built to drive, to show off, to enjoy and to surprise the bloke next to you at the lights.

If you’re looking for something a little different than the usual, with period visual appeal and genuine performance, this V8-powered FB ute should be very high on your list to bid and win.
