Rare Australian-delivered, right-hand drive post-war Benz
1926 saw the merge of an ailing Daimler and Benz after the European car industry was nearly wiped out during the First World War. The merger allowed both firms to survive – and saw the new Mercedes-Benz go on to produce some of the best post-war cars of the period!
By the 1950s, Mercedes-Benz was producing truly world-class cars that remain extremely desirable today. This period saw the birth of the iconic 300SL Gullwing and Roadster, and the stately 300 Series offered the flagship luxury experience in a user-friendly sedan package.
But Mercedes-Benz sought a car to offer at a more affordable price point than the 3.0lt inline-six powered 300 Series. The mid-50s saw the arrival of the 220S sedan, and its 2.2lt inline-six fit the bill nicely.
This 1959 Mercedes-Benz 200S (W180) sedan is a rare Australian-delivered car and right-hand drive from factory.
The car is reportedly in wonderful and largely original condition, and its 2.2lt straight-six engine is mated to a four-speed column shift manual transmission.
The car’s early history is extensively recorded, originally sold by Brighton Beach Motors on February 12, 1959. The current owner bought the car in 2016.
Under its current custodianship, the current owner spent $15,000 replacing the clutch and engine mounts; and also reconditioned the brakes, suspension and steering. The car has been reprayed in its original colour in the past, and still presents well, apart from a few small blemishes on the roof; and all bumpers have been re-chromed with new hubcaps fitted.
The seller, Oldtimer Australia, also report that the interior is in original and in fantastic condition, free of tears and rips.
Overall, the car looks to be in extremely good condition, and in perfect running order – having recently undertaken a 150km drive from its storage location in Toowoomba to Brisbane.
The car bears 78,012 miles, which Oldtimer Australia believes to be genuine.
For $35,000, this car looks to be in outstanding surviving condition, and would be a rare and sought-after addition to anyone with a proclivity for the classic Benz.
