1957 Jaguar D-type tribute – today’s tempter

Premium British classic

It’s a look not many vehicles can pull off – that sense of both grace and purposefulness enjoyed by a Jaguar D-type racer.

The market for good tribute cars has long been strong. Jaguar itself saw a niche for a continuation series back in 2018. Our 2020 story noted: “The Jaguar D-type was the most recent continuation project, announced in 2018. The company originally planned to build 100 units in period, however the aforementioned Brown’s Lane fire saw just 75 escape the factory completed. Again, the 25 new D-types were estimated to cost around US$1.5 million each, all of which were sold in short order.”

Cars out of the original batch of 75 will easily soar a very long way past that figure.

Given the eight-digit numbers involved, it’s inevitable that a market would develop for good tribute cars, made available at more achievable prices.

This example is promoted as a particularly accurate revival of a long-nose D-type, built in 1980 by Proteus Cars in the UK.

The basics of the driveline include a 3.8lt six and four-speed Moss transmission.

It’s with Young Timer in Melbourne priced at $239,990.
