1955 Chrysler New Yorker – today’s tempter

Fin-era style

Followers of some of the more wild styling indulgences from American makers in the mid to late 1950s will almost certainly know the name of Virgil Exner.

A hugely influential stylist for Chrysler and by default the industry as a whole, he was very much involed in this the fourth generation New Yorker series, which ran for just two years: 1955-56.

The generation prior owned much to its 1940s roots, while the next took the whole fins and space-age them even further.

This was the first generation that offered V8s only, namely the 331ci Firepower and 354ci Hemi. Your transmission choices were two autos: The two-speed Powerflite and three-speed Torqueflite.

New Yorkers of any type are fairly thin on the ground in this country and we did some time ago cover a spectacular 1947 Town & Country ‘woody’ convertible.

As for this example, it’s a 1955 Deluxe and a rare car in this country. Running the Firepower engine, it’s on the market for $45,000. It’s located in Blackbutt, Qld.
