Australian-built and fully restored microute; with a micro-pricetag to match
The Austin Cambridge was a line of pint-sized vehicles built from 1954-1971.
It went through several generations denoted by their A40, A50, A55 and A60 notations.
They utilised a unibody construction with independent coil-sprung front suspension and a live-axle anti-roll bar-clad rear end.
The A50 was introduced in 1954, and visually appeared identically to the preceding A40. Under the bonnet however, was a new 1.5lt four-cylinder engine breathing through a single Zenith carburettor.
Unique for Australia, alongside the four-door saloon body, was a two-door utility.
This 1955 Austin A50 is one such Australian-built ute.
It’s a bit of a restomod, with MGB running gear providing a bit more pep than the factory 50kW 1.5lt four pot.
The engine is now a larger 1.8lt unit sourced from an MGB + an MGB gearbox and diff.
Furthermore, the front suspension has been totally rebuilt with new shocks and the interior has been reupholsted with an MGB dashboard, bucket seats and some modernity provided by cruise control and reversing camera.
Overall, it looks like a neatly presented, slightly oddball, classic. The work tipped into the car might not be to everyone’s taste, but with an asking price of just $4,900 – you’ll have plenty of headroom to make it your own.
