Front-engine supercharged race car gets good interest
A 1950 Sampson CC-50 Indy speedway car is pulling strong interest in an online bidding prelude to tomorrow’s Lloyds one-off auction of a NSW collection.
The event is headlined with two Brabham race cars which are pulling solid numbers. One is well over the $130k mark at the time of writing.
However for many locals, it’s the Sampson Indy car which may be proving to be the dark horse and is likely to be gaining strong interest from across the Pacific.
The tiny 1950 racer is running what is said to be an experimental supercharged 177ci (2.9lt) four-cylinder Offenhauser engine. Offenhauser, at the time, was regarded as a major force in USA oval track racing.
The Sampson name has a long Indy history, though by the time this car was built it had already peaked.
Nevertheless this was a serious bit of kit, reputedly capable of near enough to 130mph (210km/h). Bidding has so far gone north of $70,000.
