The Chrysler Royal through the late 40s was the marque’s entry-level full size car, sharing much of its underpinnings with the more luxurious Windsor.
Not to be confused with Royal nameplate utilised by Chrysler Australia from 1957 to 1963, the Chrysler Royal ended production in 1950 after which, the Chrysler Windsor became the new entry-level six-cylinder offering.
The sole engine choice was a 250ci inline six-cylinder capable of 16hp (86 kW).
The 1949 Chrysler Royal underwent a facelift for the first time since The War, similarly it was also Chrysler’s 25th anniversary.
The facelifted was deemed conservative; the body got taller and squarer than previous models, yet was still a full-size car and gained a more mature egg-crate grille.
In that first facelift year, Chrysler only produced 141,122 Royals due to tooling difficulties in production, however went on to be one of Chrysler’s most successful models of the period.
This 1949 Chrysler Royal Club coupe was bought from the USA in 2010 and arrived in Australia in 2011.
The seller describes the car as in good condition inside and out, is a great show car as it currently stands.
The car runs and drives well, with the seller often driving the car itself to shows.
Some cast chrome work has begun to ‘pit’ but the seller states it looks fine from a short distance.
While all mechanicals and electrics function properly, the seller also states the car could do with a rewire.
All in all, the car presents itself as a great piece of 50s automotive history. The car may not be in absolute concours condition but is able to be driven and enjoyed.
Conversely, it could make a terrific platform for someone to give the chromework a onceover, and tidy up the wiring to really make it a showstopper!
