I really had no choice but to be an enthusiast. Dad was one, a founding member of the Studebaker Club, and all my life there has been a ’63 Hawk Gran Turismo in the family. My uncles were into cars as well, so there was no escape.
My first car was a ’66 Pontiac and I’ve had nearly 100 cars since, but my prized possession is a customised five-window ’32 Ford Coupe, which has ‘Steelies’, white walls and an early 348 big-block Chev V8.
I first saw it four years ago during a Valla Rod Run and it was love at first sight. I was building a ‘glass-bodied three-window ’32 at the time, but a steel five-window was my dream car. I kept in touch with the owner and ended up swapping my three-window, a Hemi engine, chassis and some money for the five-window.
I really like the fact that it hasn’t been chopped. It’s got a 348 Tri-Power V8 from a ’63 Chev fitted with three double-barrel carbs.
My wife Colleen and I are both real enthusiasts and are members of the Mountain District Hot Rod Class in the Basin (Melbourne) and also the Australian Street Rod Club.
Both clubs have a lot of social activities and that keeps us pretty busy at weekends, taking part in runs and cruises.
We both previously had Model A Roadsters, but this is much cosier and more practical, so now we go all over Victoria in all weather. We just love to drive it.
I can’t promise this will be my last car as there are already a few others in our family, but while others will come and go I see this being a long-term relationship.
