1974 Buick Electra 225 – today’s tempter

Though not a big name on the local car scene, Buick nevertheless scored steady sales here through the sixties and seventies.

In a feature on the Electra lineage, Cliff Chambers notes: “Buick began the decade with frumpy designs and sales that hovered around 250,000 units annually. By 1970 it was characterized by classy, powerful shapes generating annual sales that exceeded 665,000 putting Buick fifth on the US automotive sales charts.

“Big Buicks were popular as well with Australians who maybe weren’t at the Cadillac end of the import market but still wanted something better than a Holden-assembled Pontiac.”

This 1974 Electra 225 hardtop is a fourth-generation car sold new in Queensland. The base motor in the 225 at this stage was a 455ci (7.5lt) V8 with three-speed TH400 automatic transmission.

It’s with John Conroy in Brisbane, priced at $36,990.
