1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Veloce

My affliction started in the 1960s when, as a teenager, I was attracted to fast Italian sports cars as opposed to the mundane locally-produced cars my mates had.

Although I was an apprentice at the time, I found that a second job was all that was required to realise my dreams and in 1970 I bought my first car, an Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Veloce. Shortly after in 1971 I joined the Alfa Romeo Owners Club.

Life, marriage, children and houses got in the way and cars came and went, so it wasn’t until almost 30 years later that I renewed my acquaintance with the model and found that the time was right to attempt a restoration job of a similar car.

When the day of judgment came, this car recorded one of the highest points scores ever achieved in the Alfa Romeo club’s concours and, in later years, my car went on to win its class in the inaugural 2010 Motorclassica.

It is still a remarkably good car to drive, confirming that Alfa Romeo got it just right with a 1600cc twin cam engine, twin Weber carburettors, five-speed gearbox and four-wheel power assisted disc brakes. With a little less than 100hp in a car weighing almost 1000kg, it proves to be more than adequate in today’s traffic and provides me with an enormous amount of pleasure and enjoyment whenever I drive it.
