Classic flathead

Fords running the legendary flathead V8 have for decades been hugely popular as platforms for hotrods and so finding one in original trim is relatively rare.

In a column about a period art tribute to the Ford that featured a flathead, Rob Blackbourn observed: "Titled Detroit Industry, it presented Diego Rivera’s take on automobile manufacturing’s sophistication… The 1932-33 project commenced with several months of research and photography at Ford’s massive River Rouge Complex at Dearborn.

"Ford’s Rouge Plant was quite something. It occupied a site measuring about 2.4km x 1.6km, employed around 100,000 workers during the 1930s with in-house features including a power station, blast-furnace, steel mill, glassmaking plant, and assembly line.

"Effectively, it received raw materials (few finished components) at the front door and rolled complete cars out the back door."

This 1938 Tudor Deluxe, which the owner says is called George, runs the V8 with three-speed manual transmission. It’s had some sensible modifications over time, such as 12 volt electrics and a larger radiator.

Located in Cranbourne, Vic, it’s on the market for $38,500.
