1988 Ford Econoline camper - today's tempter
American getaway
This is something a little outside the usual local tastes, as USA-style camper vans never really made it big over here.
However you can see the appeal in them: more space than the equivalent panel van such as Sandman or Sundowner, with a whole lot more grunt than a Kombi. All this without going nuts and buying a motorhome.
The underlying truck is a long wheelbase Econoline 150 with a rebuilt Windsor 350 cube (5.7lt) V8 and auto transmission – presumably a three-speed.
Equipment includes solar charging and lithium battery, water tank and a rear seat that folds down as a bed. Meanwhile the front seats appear to swivel for a club lounge arrangement.
All up it looks like something that would fit well into a classic/muscle car owner garage. Located in WA, it’s on the market for $38,000.
