The 2014 Targa Tasmania, now in its 23rd year, is set to run from Tuesday May 6 to Sunday May 11, and Unique Cars will be there in a big way.

Targa competition draws concepts directly from the best features of the Mille Miglia, the Coupe des Alpes and the Tour de Corse to create the world's largest Tarmac Rally, with a cross section of marvellously restored classic vehicles as well as the latest in grand touring and sports machines.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the mighty Mustang, Uncle Phil will be driving our delightful giveaway 1964-and-a-half Mustang Coupe in the Unique Cars Historic Rally - which takes in the closed road sections of the real thing, all at a relaxed touring pace - while editor Greg Leech will pilot a 2013 Mustang supplied by Mustang Motorsport, in Regularity competition.

"Targa is my favourite event, bar none," said Phil.

Greg and son Spencer are set to take on their first competitive Regularity event in this year's Targa. The Regularity component offers a competitive environment on closed rally sections, but is limited to 130km/h and is open to cars not fitted with a roll cage.

"I've done the Tour before, and loved that, but this is a way to be sort of fair dinkum, but in a relaxed way," said Greg.

Son Spencer is a rusted-on petrolhead, motocrossing a Honda CRF150R and riding a 1973 Norton Commando at the Easter meet at Broadford in Victoria this year.

"I just can't wait for this. It's been an ambition of mine for as long as I can remember," said the enthusiastic 17-year-old.

Their Targa car, which started life as a bog stock 2013 model ’Stang, is converted to right hand drive, powered by a 5.0-litre V8 and coupled to a six-speed auto transmission. It is then up to the able crew at Mustang Motorsport (who are old hands at Targa Tassie competition) to bring it up to a more competitive state of tune and appearance.
